Simple Jewellery Storage Tips to Help Prevent Tangling and Damage

Separate pieces by type

Use divided trays or small individual pouches so pieces do not rub, catch or become tangled. Keep delicate chains away from earrings with projecting posts and from textured bangles that may snag them.

Arrange frequently worn items where you can lift them out without moving everything else. Less handling means fewer opportunities for knots and accidental drops.

Fasten and lay chains flat

Close each clasp before storage. Lay chains flat in separate channels, loop them around individual card inserts, or hang each one from its own hook. Avoid placing several loose chains in one pouch.

For a pendant necklace, leave a little distance between the pendant and chain when laying it down so the chain does not coil tightly around the centrepiece.

Keep earring pairs together

Use small compartments, earring cards or soft pouches for each pair. Replace backs after wearing so posts remain protected and pairs stay complete. Larger drop earrings should lie flat with enough room for decorative sections to rest naturally.

Choose a dry location

Store jewellery away from bathrooms, open windows and damp surfaces. Make sure each piece is dry before closing its box or pouch. A clean drawer or wardrobe shelf protects jewellery from dust and accidental splashes.

Pack carefully for travel

A compact travel case with fixed compartments is useful. Thread fine chains through separate loops, secure earrings to a card and place rings in padded slots. Do not put jewellery loose into a handbag, where it can tangle with keys, cosmetics or zips.

Create a routine you can maintain

• Return pieces to the same compartment after wear.
• Keep matching pairs and sets together but physically separated within the space.
• Leave a small soft cloth nearby for a quick wipe before storage.
• Review the box occasionally and gently untangle any early knots before they tighten.
